Community Forum: New Challenges, New Opportunities
Peace and Possibilities in Life's Last Chapter
Award-winning journalist and author Stephen Kiernan will host a community forum to discuss end-of-life care in America and Vermont on Thursday, November 8 at 7 p.m. in Tuttle Hall Theatre at the College of St. Joseph. The forum, New Challenges, New Opportunities: Peace and Possibilities in Life’s Last Chapter is being sponsored by the Hospice program of the Rutland Area Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice and the Palliative Care program of Rutland Regional Medical Center in recognition of National Hospice and Palliative Care Month.
Kiernan, author of Last Rights: Rescuing the End of Life from the Medical System, examined hundreds of scientific research papers and conducted more than 200 interviews, putting together a picture of how the medical system has not evolved to reflect the ways dying has changed.
"Far too many people suffer needlessly at the end of their lives” says Kiernan. “My goal is to tell stories – some of them inspirational, some sobering, some just hilarious – that show there is a better way."
The forum is free and open to the public.
